TRADE DEBTS.
HITCH IN NEGOTIATIONS WITH ITALY. STATEMENT IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS. RUGBY, July 30. The President of the Board of Trade was questioned in the House of Commons on trade with Italy. Mr. Runciman replied: “Chi the termination of sanctions his Majesty’s Government opened discussions with the Italian Government for resumption of trade between Britain and Italy. His Majesty’s Government regards it as essential that the arrangements to be made should provide for settlement of outstanding trade debts, and could not contemplate even a temporary arrangement whjfh did not include such a provision. I regret to state that the Italian Government was not willing to accept any arrangement in regard to trade debts which his Majesty’s Government could regard as adequate. The negotiations have been temporarily suspended.” Mr. Runciman went on to explain that as a result of the working of the severe restrictions imposed by the Italian Government on imports from the United Kingdom and of the regulations regarding payment for exports from Italy, such exports to the United Kingdom other than fresh fruit or vegetables cannot be effected.
