“RAILWAYS MAGAZINE.”

BIG AUGUST ISSUE. “A well-balanced budget’’ would be a fair summary of the varied features prose, verse and pictures—of the August issue of the “New Zealand Railways Magazine.’’ As usual the publication is notable for its encouragement of New Zealand writers and artists (who have about twenty drawings in the current issue). James Cowan, whose “Famous New Zealanders’’ are a regular feature of the magazine, brightly sketches the dramatic career of the Right Hon. M. J. Savage. “Robin Hyde’’ writes of happy days in Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty. Mr. Ken Alexander, serves some merry philosophy in “The Wife and the Wherefore.” “The Thirteenth Clue,” a very mysterious mix-up, is taken on another stage by Mr. C. A. L. Treadwell in a thrilling narrative. Plenty of people in cities and towns should be interested in Mr. O. N. Gillespie’s well-written claim for Wellington that it is a ‘‘Paradise for Poets and Painters” and the “World’s Prettiest Capital City;” the two pages of original verse are worthy of special praise as impressive additions to New Zealand literature; Mr. R. M. Jenkins continues interestingly his “Limited Night Entertainments,” Mr. W. F. Ingram, a remarkably well-informed authority on sport, has another excellent serving of “Panorama of the Playground;” the “Women’s Section” maintains its high standard of helpfulness. Other features—including notes and comments on books and authors, a cheerful story for children by Shiela Russell and a chronicle of Maori wisdom—should help to maintain the magazine’s popularity.
