MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. A meeting of the Carterton Borough Council was held on Tuesday night, thd Acting Mayor, Mr. D. L. Taverner, presiding. Mr. Taverner extended a welcome to the new councillor, E. McKenzie, who suitably replied. The annual balance sheet, duly audited by the Audit Department, was adopted, discussion on same being taken in committee. Support was accorded the Petone Borough Council’s circular in regard to the increasing hospital rates. The Petone Borough asked for a Government inquiry into the cost of hospital administration. The borough inspector, Mr. F. H. Taplin, tendered his resignation as from July 31, as he wished to accept a position with the Amalgamated Brick and Tile Co., Ltd. (Wellington). Some discussion took place regarding the frontage of building sections within the borough. The opinion was expressed that no section should be less than one chain frontage. There was no tack of space in Carterton, and there should be a by-law to prevent houses being built unnecessarily close together, said Councillor Udy. No action was taken, though councillors were in accord with Councillor Udy’s opinion. The Town Clerk was authorised to make temporary arrangements for the issue of drivers' licenses. Councillor McKenzie was elected to fill the vacancies on the Finance and Works committees.
