A large slip, which came down last evening, completely blocked the Mas-terton-Weber Main Highway at Te Rongi. The slip, which is about five to six feet deep, has blocked the road for a distance of about three chains and the road is likely to be closed for traffic for about a week.

An Auckland proposal that the annual conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce should be held in November next, at Wellington, in order to avoid clashing with the Empire Chambers of Commerce Congress at Wellington in October, was supported by the Masterton Chamber of Commerce yesterday. The Service Officer of the Wairarapa Automobile Association advised last night that a slip had come down in the Manavfatu Gorge, completely blocking the road. Steps are being taken to remove the slip, which occurred about a mile from the Manawatu side of the Gorge road. In the meantime the Pahiatua Track is open and is reported to be in fairly good order. After a brief discussion yesterday, the Masterton Chamber of Commerce decided to support the Associated Chambers of Comerce in urging that compulsory powers should be taken to deal with the reorganisation of local government and the amalgamation of local bodies and to urge that the first step in that direction was to enforce fully the provisions relating to regional planning' now on the Statute Book. 4 ■*' * ** ' Five New Zealand oil companies who had applied to the. Arbitration Court for an extension of the working week to 44 hours withdrew‘their application yesterday and an agreement was reached providing for Saturday Work in certain circumstances and for an extension of the period of continuous work without a meal to five hours. Th® Court said an order would be made for a 40 hour w;eek with the provisos 1 agreed upon. —(F>A.) A gripping account of secret service work in the BoeY Wa¥ was given by Mr. J. V. Dolan in an address to the Mastertan Optimist Club yesterday. Mr. A. E. Bate presided. Mr. Dolan also described most interestingly the relief of Ladysmith and other operations. He was heartily thanked,* and at the request of those present agreed to continue his address at next week’s meeting. It was decided to hold the next meeting in the evening for tea. The meeting is to .commence at 5.46, and will finish at 7.. pun. In the Y.M.C.A. billiards and snooker competition last night Oddfellows defeated Y.M.C.A. B by 9 games to 1. Liddell beat W. Clark. E. Buckton, who beat F. Keen, was the only Y.M.C.A. player to win his snooker game. To-morrow night Catholic Club will play Y.M.C.A. A in the final game of the round.

For the annual Charity Ball, which is to take place in the Masterton Municipal Hall on Wednesday next, a feature is being made of the decorations, which will provide a bright and colourful background to a brilliant ballroom. Eighteen debutantes from Masterton, Carterton, Featherston, Martinborough, Eketahuna, Pahiatua and as far away as Feilding, will be presented to his Grace, Archbishop O’Shea, at 8.45. The presentation i 3 always a feature of the ball and will be carried out with full dignity, yet without curtailing the dancing more than half an hour. The committee has extended ah invitation to the members of the ladies’ Fijian hockey team, who will be in Masterton on that date. The Blue River Dance Band, and an auxiliary band during the supper period, are to provide the - music and •an efficient team of M’s.C. will ensure a perfectly run ball.
