SEAPLANE CRASHES.

WHILE CIRCLING QUEEN MARY. ONE OCCUPANT KILLED & OTHERS INJURED. LINER EXPECTED TO BREAK RECORD. (Received Monday, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 26. A large seaplane flying out to greet the Queen Mary crashed in the sea five miles off the Nantucket Lightship, resulting in the death of one of the occupants. The remaining nine were saved by the steamship Exermont, which sent details of the accident by radio. Several of those saved were seriously injured, according to the Exermont, which also reported that the Queen Mary was rushing medical supplies. It earlier appeared that the Queen Mary might set an Atlantic record by arriving in New York in the early evening. Whether the accident would prevent this was not immediately ascertained. A later message states that the seaplane was circling the Queen Mary when it crashed. The Queen Mary radioed to the Exermont, which it had just passed, to pick up the occupants. The Queen Mary proceeded, but the ehip’s physicians radioed directions for the care of the wounded. It now appears likely that the Queen Mary will establish a record.

A FAST PASSAGE. BUT NORMANDIE’S SPEED NOT YET EQUALLED. (Received Monday, 10.48 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 27. He route followed by the Queen Mary was somewhat shorter than the Normandie’s and her average speed on the passage below the French liner’s. The British ship covered 3,096 miles from Cherbourg Breakwater in four days, nine hours 44 minutes, at an average speed of 29.28 knots; while the Normandie covered 3,192 miles in four days, 11 hours, 42 minutes at an average speed of 29.64 knots. The Queen Mary will not dock until the morning therefore no official claim to a new record has yet been advanced.
