CRITICISM OF THE ARAWA MEMORIAL HASTINGS, July 35. The hope that the New Zealand Rugby Union would not be influenced by the memorial presented by the Arawas in connection with the Springbok Rugby team’s visit was expressed by Mr. H. P. Tomoana, who said that the memorial was not supported by Hawke’s Bay, East Coast, or anywhere other than in the Auckland Province, and even there there was no unanimity on the question. “The Maori people will not be as surprised as the pakehas at the action of the Arawas,” he said, “for we know the Arawas too well. We have an old proverb, “Te Arawa mangai nui, which means 1 Arawa with the big mouth,’ or ‘the boastful Arawa.’ Their opinions are not the opinions of the Maori people generally; of that I can assure you. It would be a great pity if we are not allowed to take our part in the games. I can assure ycu the voice of the Arawa is definitely not the voice of the Maori people, of New Zealand—far from it, indeed.”— (P.A.)
