LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The 1936 Hector Medal for research in Botany was last night presented to Dr. W. R. B. Oliver, director of the Dominion Museum, Wellington, by the President of the Royal Society of New Zealand, Dr. H. W. Williams, bishop of Waiapu, at a meeting of the Wellington Philosophical Society.—(P.A.) After playing the Australians at Wellington on September 5 the All Black team will be kept together for the second match at Dunedin on September 12. The New Zealand Union last night decided that the team should play a game against South Canterbury at Timferu on September 9 on its way tp Dunedin.—(P.A.)
Falling into a vat containing hot caustic soda used for removing grease and other foreign matter from tin cans, Leslie Russell, aged 29, a married man, resident at Ponsonby, Auckland, was seriously injured at the factory of Messrs Harvey and Sons yesterday morning. He was wearing rubber boots and standing on a wet floor. Probably he slipped and fell forward into the vat, which stands three feet above the ground. Fellow-employees promptly hosed Russell, preventing the caustic soda from eating into his skin. He suffered severe scalds to his ankles and chest.
