THE REGENT.
* * MODERN TIMES. ’ ’ “Modern Times,” featuring the world-famous comedian, Charlie Chaplin, will be shown at three sessions at the Regent Theatre to-day, at 11 a.m., 2.15 and 7.45 p.m. This film marks the nearest the comedian has ever come to letting his voice be heard on the screen. The scene, in which Charlie performs a hilarious pantomine to the music, of “Titina,” is the first sequence in a Chaplin film to be shot directly in sound. “Modern Times,” which was written, produced and directed by Charlie Chaplin, who also wrote the music, presents the comedian in his same old lovable tramp characterisation, but in a somewhat different setting. Gigantic factory sets and huge cafe scenes dwarf the pathetic, bewildered little figure, but through it all he wanders hopefully, battling the vicissitudes of life with the tragicomic fortitude that has endeared him to the world. “Modern Times,” which introduces Charlie’s lovely new leading lady ,Paulette Goddard, who has been pronounced one of the genuine screen “finds” of the decade, is released through United Artists. Reserves at W. G. Perry’s, ’phone 2496.
