Quarter-final: J. D. Budge and Mrs F. Fabyan (U.S.A) beat F. Kukuljevic (Yugoslavia) and Countess Valdene (Spain), 6/0, 6/2. Mrs Sperling entered the final of the women’s singles after a soporific match of long base-line rallies. Mrs Mathieu was exhausted in the second set by her opponent’s inartistic but safe and tireless pune. There was more vitality about the other semi-finals, Miss Jacobs breaking up the much-improved Miss Jedrzejowska's hard-driving game by chops, which the Polish woman repeatedly overhit. Australia’s last hope rested in the hands of McGrath and Sproule in the men’s doubles. The small crowd in the centre court, however, found nothing to enthuse over, the Americans i Allison and Van Ryn winning without effort in straight sets. Sproule’s overhead work was very weak. Borotra and Brugnon comfortably defeated the American Cunningham and the Japanese Itoh, but during the match Borotra ran into the stop netting and injured one of his legs. He continued, though in pain, but is now awaiting medical advice whether or not to withdraw.
BOROTRA’B INJURY. (Received Friday, 8.15 p.m.) LONDON, July 0. Borotra tore a thigh muscle. He will decide to-morrow morning whether he will play or not.
