“ROSE OF THE RANCHO.”

From a play that had its first showing on Broadway back in 1912 Paramount has come forth with one of the most brilliant musical romances yet seen on the screen—“ Rose of the Rancho,” which will be shown at the Regent Theatre to-day at 2.15 and 7.45, with Gladys Swarthout, youthful star of the Metropolitan Opera, making her film debut opposite John Boles. “Rose of the Rancho” enjoyed huge successes both as a legitimate production and in the silent pictures. It was first produced for the screen in 1614 by Cecil B. DeMille. But this version—so copiously interspersed with music that it falls under the operetta heading—is by all odds the last word.. The story is historical and deals with the old town of Monterey in the year 1852, two years after California became the thirty-first state to be admitted to the Union. Miss Swarthout sings five songs while John Boles, who plays opposite her, has three, and they sing a duet together. Willie Howard has two songs.
