BOUNDARY ROADS.
PROPOSED TAR SEALING. BOROUGH COUNCIL DISCUSSION. A letter from the Masterton County Council, which came to the Borough Council at its meeting last night stated that the permanent surfacing of Ngaumutawa and South Belt Roads was estimated to cost the Borough Council £428 for the first year’s work. In the following year the estimated cost to the Borough would be £595. The Borough Council decided, on the recommendation of the Works and Finance Committee, that it could not undertake the work this year. Recalling correspondence which had passed between the two bodies regarding the proposed permanent surfacing of the roads, Councillor W. Kemp said he did not think that the Borough Council had been quite fair in the matter. The County Council had come to light with £3OO for the surfacing of South Road. Since the County Council had taken over the maintenance of the boundady roads, the cost had been reduced by nearly half. The permanent surfacing would result in still further savings being effected. He emphatically denied that he had any knowledge of the County’s proposal prior to the matter being raised at the committee meeting and went on to suggest that when the Mayor passed an envelope to two councillors at the committee meeting it had contained a noto referring to him. When questioned by the Mayor, both councillors concerned denied that anything referring to Councillor Kemp had been written on an envelope by the Mayor. “Do you accept the statement of these two councillors!” Mr. Jordan asked Councillor Kemp, whfr replied in the affirmative. Mr. Jordan: “And that disposes of the matter!” Councillor Kemp: “Yes.” Mr. Jordan: “I am very glad of that. ’ ’ Councillor A. Rippon said he was in favour of sealing one of the boundary roads.
