Masterton: Miss A. M. Brown reported as follows for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. May 23:—Barograph, 30.67; shade temperature, maximum, 48.2; minimum, 38.2; terrestrial, 29.8; sunshine, 18 minutes; rain, 71 points; frost, .6 degrees. May 24: Barograph, 30.55; shade temperature, maximum, 48.3; minimum, 25.6; terrestrial, 19; sunshine, nil; frost, 11.4 degrees. The Government Meteorologist (Dr. E. Gidson) reported at 4 p.m. yesterday:—Pressure has remained low to the north, while an intense anticyclone extends from Eastern Australia across the Tasman Sea and New Zealand. Forecast: Winds, variable at first in the southern half of the South Island; otherwise easterly to southerly prevailing, moderate to strong over the North Island and of gale force at places in the far north, light to moderate in the south. Weather: Cloudy to overcast in the northern and north-eastern portions of the North Island, with scattered rains, but some heavy falls in the extreme north; elsewhere fair to fine. Temperatures cold with sharp inland frosts. iSun rises, 7.0 a.m.; sets, 4.35 p.m. Lighting-up time, 5.5 p.m.
