RAIL CARS.

OBSERVATIONS BY MEMBER FOR MASTERTON.

ALL-ROUND IMPROVEMENT IN SERVICES. (By Telegraph—“ The Age” Special). WELLINGTON, May 22. The stage reached in the evolution of railway rolling stock with the appearance of the rail ear was the subject of interesting comment by the member for Masterton (Mr. J. Robertson) when speaking on the second reading of the Transport Amendment Bill in the House of Representatives. He said he had inspected these ears, which were nearing completion, and he was satisfied that they would go a long way towards solving at least a part of the Dominion’s transport problems. Not only would they supply a passenger service which would be satisfactory, but they would also make possible a satisfactory goods service. The trouble of our railway system in the past, in the opinion of anyone who had given any thought to it, had been the necessity of providing a passenger service for a widely scattered population, living in small hamlets and not providing sufficient traffic ' to make a complete passenger service a payable proposition. Consequently there had been mixed passenger and goods trains, which gave neither a satisfactory passenger service nor adequate facilities for goods. But rail ears, by divorcing one class of traffic from the other, would enable a fast and satisfactory passenger service to be operated, and an equally efficient goods service, which would probably be run at night. Jffe hoped the Department would seriously consider the problem of delivery from the rail to the client. If that were done there would be a splendidly eo-ordinated service, and road transport would then fall into its proper place in the whole scheme of Dominion transport. ■
