The danger of motor cars skidding on longitudinal planks on bridges was mentioned by the secretary of the Southland Automobile Association, Mr. J. 8. Dick, at the last meeting of the association. Wells, president of Auckland University College, at the graduation ceremony. ‘‘But,” he continued, “if science makes advances during the next 50 years equal to those made during the past half century, and if the social sciences respond to the call that is being made up<on them to devise means for the more even distribution of goods among consumers, the children of some of those present may live to see 20 hours of work a week on the part of the able-bodied between the ages of 25 and 50 sufficient to supply the needs of all.”
“This man tried to push his way into a private party that was being held in Tinakori Road on Saturday night,” said Sub-laspector C. E. Roach, when James Sharp, a labourer, aged 29. appeared before Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Wellington yesterday, on charges of drunkenness and of breaking a pane of glass valued at 15s, the property of Leo Goble. On being refused admittance, he broke a panel of glass in the front door. The accused, who pleaded guilty on both counts, was fined 5s on the first charge, and £2 and costs on the second. He was also ordered to make good the damage done.— (P.A.)
