CONDITIONS IN MASTERTON.

TOWN AND DISTRICT ESCAPE LIGHTLY. SNOW ON THE TARARUAS. Masterton received a taste of the storm on Saturday. Heavy rain, accompanied by a wind that rose at times to gale force, set in in the early hours of Saturday . morning and continued until about 2 o’clock in the afternoon. In Masterton several windows were blown in while trees and fences suffered minor damage. A number of tall pine trees along the main road near Greytown were blown down. The boisterous conditions in the afternoon caused the abandonment of practically all sporting fixtures, several parties of golfers and the harriers being the only ones to brave the storm. Queen Street was all but deserted on Saturday night, the wind, rain and bitter cold making fire-sides far more attractive than outdoors. The conditions took a decided turn for the better in the early hours of yesterday morning and the warm sunshine experienced later in the day was in striking contrast to the hail and driving rain of the previous day. The Tararua Ranges, covered with a thick mantle of snow, presented a magnificent sight yesterday, the peaks standing out clear and reflecting the rays of the sun.
