ART AND CRAFT WORK

DSSPLAY' AT SOLWAY COLLEGE.

An excellent display of varied oxsamples of art and craft work is at preisent on view in the- studio at Solway i College. Members of- the classes taught ;by Miss S. Latham, Art Mistress, have burned their hands te many interesting activities, with results that bear witness to capable instruction and in many eases to- the expression of natural talent. Sketches and other paintings are not as numerous as in some former displays at Solway College, but examples of- good work done by drawing classes are on view. Boldly designed elay models, finished in colours, are conspicuous and there are ehoiee examples also of mflrquetry, barbel®, and other craft work. Painted tapestries and' silk-art work—rich and elaborate painted and applied decorations on a base of organdi—are features of the- display. Very fine examples of dressmaking on view ineluda afternoon, beach and tennis frocks, beautifully designed and madea. A notable item in this category is On attractive yachting costume —■ jacket and “slacks.” There is mueh beautiful needlework of various kinds and it is worthy of note that the junior girls have made themselves pretty little froeks, with hats to match. During the year the Solway girls have made themselves sports dresses of various kinds, including shorts, but these are too much in demand to be exhibited in the studio. The display has been inspected with great interest by visitors during the last day or two and will be on view again to-day. The annual school concert will be given in the Assembly Hall this evening at 8 o’clock. On Monday evening, at the same hour, the play ‘‘Dear Brutus” will be staged. The break-up ceremony is set down for Tuesday evening at 7.30.
