ALLEGED FRAUD.
MAN & WOMAN COMMITTED POB TRIAL. AUCKLAND P.O. SAVINGS BANK CASE. AUCKLAND, October 2. The Lower Court hearing of the bank fraud charges against Laul Edward Din, or Dean, and Madeline Elizabeth Din, or Dean, concluded this morning. The accused were committed for trial at the Supreme Court. Bail was refused the male accused but the woman was allowed bail in her own recognisance of £lOOO and two sureties of £5OO each. The male accused was charged that by false pretendes he obtained on April 1, 1935, £lBOO, on July 12, £9OO, and on August 1, £lBso’ from the Auckland branch of the P’ost Office Savings Bank. He was also indicted on three charges of forgery. The female accused was joined with the other accused in respect of a charge of obtaining £lB5O. Detective-Sergeant Walsh gave evidence as to a series of interviews with the male accused. Asked if he had seen withdrawal slips for £9OO and £lBOO, the accused said he preferred to make no statement. Witness noticed that the male accused said he had not seen the withdrawal slips before and knew nothing about hair dye found in his suitcase. Witness said that Din, referring to a brother-in-law in Australia, had said: “Brown is not mixed up in this.” On September 18 witness showed the male accused two letters written to his father at the Chatham Islands, one requesting a loan of £5. The accused admitted writing the letters.
Replying to Mr. Kinston, counsel for the male accused, witness said he was unable to say whether all bat a small amount of the money had been recovered. Counsel said he understood all but £lOO of the £4500 involved: had been recovered.—-(P.A.)
