WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.
MOUNT BRUCE. At the Mount Women’s Institute meeting last Thursday, the president, Mrs. D. McLaughlan, presided over a good attendance of members. Mrs. Keir (Kaituna) demonstrated how to make papier-mache articles, and displayed some fine examples of her work. Mrs. Sinclair (Kaituna) also very ably described how to make paper flowers. A competition for the heaviest half-dozen hen eggs resulted in five members winning with the same weight. A vote of thanks was extended to Mrs. Keir and Mrs. Sinclair. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem* HASTWELLS. The monthly meeting of the Hastwells Women’s Institute was held last Wednesday. Mrs. Dick presided /and welcomed members and three visitors, Mesdames Baucke, Bilby and Hansen. Mrs. Baucke demonstrated the making of paper flowers. She also explained . how to make candlesticks from used cotton reels. Mrs. Baucke brought with her some beautifully worked and made stocking and duster bags. Also displayed were baskets, posies, and mats made from beads. A spray of flowers made from fish scales was much admired by all members.* A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Baucke for her very interesting demonstrations. The competition was for the best arranged bowl and vase of flowers. The bowl was won by Miss A. Dick with Miss E. Dick second, and the vase by Mrs. A. V. Madson, with Miss J. Elliott second. Mrs. Baucke and Mrs. Bilby kindly judged the competitions. The music lovers competition was won by
Mrs. Elliott with Mrs. G. Hansen second. Delegates were appointed to attend the council meeting at Hamua on October 24. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Thorby and Broadbent. (
