“ENORMOUS PROTECTION” .. DENOUNCED. . « FALL IN ACREAGE & YIELD, (By Telegraph—‘ ‘ The Age ” Special.) ■WELLINGTON, October 1. The -question of the protection of .New Zealand wheatgrowers being raisedin the House of Representatives by Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, MJ?., who has asked the-Minister of Industries and Commerce if he, is aware that notwithstanding the enormous protection granted to this industry under the sliding . scale . of duties, not less than 60,882 fewer acres of wheat were sown, last year and thpt the yield decreased by 102,772 bushels compared with the'pre'Vidus year. Mr. Wilkinson also wished to impress on the Ministers , that l last year’s yield of 5,933,245 bushels was not sufficient for the requirements of the Dominion for a full year-, and said that in view of the unsatisfactory position, he would recommend the Government to abolish the present sliding scale so that wheat and flour might be imported at prices below the present rates fixed by the Wheat Growers’ Association and Flour-millers’ Association.
