The vital statistics registefedJitt Masterton for the month of September were, the figures for the correspondingmonth last year being shown in parentheses:—Births, 24 (19); deaths, 9(11); marriages, 8 (6).

At the weekly -luncheon of' the- Masterton Optimist Club yesterday; members were entertained by Mr. Hl Ai R. Dunderdale, who gave a very interesting address on “Abyssinia/'’' Mr. Dunderdale was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his informative, address.

The official opening of the-Masterton Bowling Club’s season will’ take place on Saturday. A large attendance of members and visitors from other clubs is expected. The president, Mr. E. W. Nielsen and the committee extend a eordial invitation to all bowlers and their friends to attend.

A Presbyterian Church, service will be held at Kopuaranga, at 2.30 p.m. on Sunday next, October 6, Sunday School opening at 2 p.m. Young People’s Day, October 6, will be observed by a special service at Lansdowne at ’ll a.m., when Sunday School scholars from different parts of the parish will take part. A good attendance of parents and others is expected.

Considerable interest is being taken in the Wairarapa Table Tennis Association’s championship tourney, which is to open in Masterton to-night. Nearly 100 entries have been received. The A grade games will be decided in- the Y.M.C.A, gymnasium and the B grade in the Catholic-’dab’s Room. Players are requested to be in attendance promptly at 7-b’clock. The tourney will be concluded-on .Saturday night in the Y.M.C.A. lioomk The value of building permits issued by the Masterton Borough Council in September show, an improvement of £2500 over the f corresponding montrft last year. Fourteen permits were issued last month (for a value of £6901' 10s 6d, and inclhde 8 dwellings aid 1 double dwelling.. For September, 1934, the value was £4354 7s 6d, for 13 permits. The Masterton County Council issued 2 permits.-last month, valued at £750, one being for a cottage. A delightfully varied .entertainment will be provided in the Epiphany Hall, Kuripuni, on Monday, October 7, when the St. Matthew’s Girls’ Club will present their annual concert. A one-act comedy entitled “My Herbert Says,” together with songs and dances in colourful costumes will contribute towards a splendid evening’s entertainment. The whole performance is one of absorbing interest apd amusement. The evening will conclude with a dance until midnight, - ■ jf ' The rainfall at Te Wharau so far this year has been well above the average. Mr. F. C. H. Cutter reports that! the total for the nine months of this year is 52.14 inches, which is over 12 idches more than that recorded for the whole of last year. In September 10.09 inches were registered. Blake, visited Mount Holdsworth, on Monday and repaired the fence alongside the hut, fixed a new gate by Mr. Johns's house, repaired a broken culvert, and moved a very large boulder in one of the cuttings, to give more room to buses going to the mountain. Opossum trappers, in appreciation of having been allowed to use Bannister Hut during the recent season, formed a working party tinder Mr. E. Lane, and put in several days' work, improving the track from the hut to Donnelly's Camp. They erected new bridges over the culverts, repaired tthe ladder at the swing bridge and the chimney in Bannister Hut. H
