COUNTY AFFAIRS.

MEETING OE WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNCIL. (“The Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council was held yesterday. The chairman, Mr. Duncan McGregor presided over a full attendance of members. The treasurer reported a cash credit balance of £3493 7s lid. Accounts passed totalled £2,199 13s lid. The ranger reported that 25 head of cattle had been impounded. The waterrace overseer reported that a visit had been made to the head works in company with Councillors Benall, Brazendale, Reid, Thorne and the overseer and it was decided to sledge boulders from the centre of the river to the northern bank. If this was not effective then -a groyne would be put in up the river. A start had been made and if the river kept low the work would be finished this coming week. A full head of water had been kept running during the month. Three leaks had been repaired and general cleaning carried out on 28 properties.

The county overseer reported that metalling had been done on Chester, Brooklyn, Freezing Works, East Taratihi, Francis, Matarawa and East Coast roads. The decking had been lifted ( and cramped together on the Blackwater bridge and 49 chains of resealing had been done on the main road north. The crusher had been shifted to the Waiohine site. Tenders for contract No. 1 and No. 2 for metal for Flat Point Road were accepted from Mr. O. R. Fairbrother.

The water-race overseer was instruct’ed to confer with Mr. E. Rayner regarding the main race and to report to the next meeting.

Councillor Cameron and the overseer were deputed to see Mr. lan Mcßae, Tyneside, with reference to his request to have two pipe culverts put in on the road opposite his homestead.

With reference to Mr. W. Howard Booth’s request at the last meeting of the council, the engineer submitted his report and the council decided that it ‘was not justified in doing anything further in the matter. A copy of Mr. /Sladden’s report is to be sent to Mr. Booth.

Regarding the Schofield Bridge the engineer reported that the fractured transom on this bridge had been replaced with one of iron bark and the bridge was now in as good condition as it was before.

A request was received from settlers to metal about 30 chains of road connecting the Waikakeke and Para roads. The council decided to leave this matter for consideration with next year’s the same decision being given to Mrs. H. B. McKenzie’s request for the removal of several points on the Rocky Hill Road.
