OBITUARY.

MR. WILLIAM RUTHERFORD. A career reaching well back into the .pioneering days of New Zealand ended last evening, when Mr. William Rutherford died at the residence of his son, Mr. C. W. Rutherford, Tararua Street. Tho late Mr. Rutherford was born in Nelson just over 86 years ago and lived there for about thirty years. He then removed with his family to South Canterbury, where he engaged in sheep' farming and later in stock dealing. After forty years in Canterbury, Mr. Rutherford came to the North Island, about fifteen years ago. His last years were spent in Masterton, where he lived with his son, Mr. C. W. Rutherford. The late Mr. Rutherford was predeceased by his wife about 27 years ago. His surviving relatives, to whom much sympathy will be extended in their bereavement, are three sons—Messrs C. W. Rutherford (Masterton), J. T. Rutherford (Hataita'i) and D. G. Rutherford (Peel Forest, South Canterbury), and two daughters—Mesdames G. O ’Dowd (Fairlie, Canterbury) and J. Greig (Westport). The funeral is to leave the residence of Mr. C. W. Rutherford, Tararua Street, to-morrow at 2 p.m. for the Masterton Cemetery.

; MB. W. A. CARPENTER. The death occurred last week of Mr. William Andrew Carpenter, a widely known and very popular resident of Governor’s Bay, and for the last 23 years clerk of the Mount Herbert County Council. Mr. Carpenter came to New Zealand in 1883 on the last voyage of tho sailing ship Wellington. He leaves a widow and one son (Mr. B. M. Carpenter, of Masterton) and one daughter (Miss W. Carpenter, of Wellington), four grandchildren and one great grandchild. At the funeral the chief mourners were Mr. Bernard Carpenter (Masterton) and Miss Carpenter. MBS. E. NITZ. Mrs. Isabella Nitz, wife of Mr. Edgar Nitz, " Stansborough, ” Te Wharau, whose_death was reported yesterday had been in ill health for a number of years. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. J. McGregor, Essex Street, Masterton. Of a bright and cheerful disposition the late Mrs. Nitz bad made many close friends. She is survived by her husband and two daughters (Misses Mollie and Gwen Nitz), who will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their sad bereavement. The funeral will take place to-day and will leave the residence of Mr. M. J. McGregor, Essex Street, at 16.36 a.m. for the Masterton Cemetery. MVS A. LEE. The death took place suddenly at Wanganui on Sunday afternoon of Mrs. Agnes Lee, a well known and highly respected former resident of Martinborough. The late Mrs. Lee was the wife of Mr. C. W. Lee, formerly headmaster of the Martinborough School, and an aunt of Mrs. F. E. Perry, “Maraenui,” Martinborough. She had endeared herself to all with whom she came in contact, and her death will be regretted by a wide circle of friends in this district.
