FIFTH CRICKET TEST

AUSTRALIA’S FIRST INNINGS CONCLUDED. SCORE SECOND HIGHEST i AGAINST ENGLAND I . HOME side; make; PROMISING START. LONDON, August 20. Though, the grip Australia secured on the game during the first day’s play was not loosened, proceedings in the fifth cricket Test at the Oval to-day were more even. The English bowlers, particularly Bowes and Allen, tackled their task with renewed energy, and did well to dispose of eight Australian batsmen for an additional 226 runs. The innings closed for 70il, Australia’s second highest Test score against Eingland. Ponsforjl secured the highest score for the innings by carrying his total to 266, but none of the other batsmen managed to reach 60. Woodfull, who went in third wicket down, was only one short of that mark, but the best batting in the concluding stages of the innings .was provided by -Oldfield, who scored 42. not out and achieved the distinction of being the first wicketkeeper to score 1000 runs in Test cricket. Kippax batted well for a moderate score. Most of the Australian wickets were taken by Rowes and Allen, who secured, four apiece. Bowes was used more man Allen, and had slightly the better average. The remaining ’two wickets went -to the other fast bowler, Clark, the medium-paced and spin bowlers failing to meet with success. The most overs of any of the seven bowlers tried were sent down by Verity. For their reply to Australia’s huge total England were given a good start by .Sutcliffe and "Walters, who were unbeaten after scoring 90 runs. Walters was particularly brisk early in the innings.
