WICKETS FALLING

ENGLAND’S FIRST INNINGS IN FINAL TEST. O’REILLY IN SPLENDID FORMGRIMMETT ALSO SUCCESSFUL. (Received This Day, 1.10 a.m.) LONDON, August 21. The day was mild with a blue sky and light- breeze for the resumption of the cricket Test between Australia and England. There were 20,000 present when play started. Three of England’s wickets fell in 25 minutes l , with the addition of 21 runs, and at the luncheon adjournment five wickets were down, for 211. Grimmett opened to Sutcliffe with O’Reilly at the opposite end. The wicket appeared to foe easy. Runs came in singles and twos, 103 coming up in 105 minutes. Bradman was cheered for brilliant fielding. Indeed, the Australians’ fielding was all that could be desired. Grimmett’s fourth over beat Sutcliffe. The ball spun off the bat and he was smartly caught by Oldfield on the leg side.—l/104. Woolley had- the best reception of any batsman in the match. Walters was the next early victim. Attempting to drive O’Reilly he mistimed, Kippax running in for a nicely-judged catch at mid-on. He batted 115 minutes and hit four 4’s. In the same over, Woolley, playing a weak defensive shot, poked the ball straight Into the hands of McCabe at silly shortleg. Woolley walked out dejectedly. His come-back was an unfortunate affair. Three wickets had fallen today in 25 minutes with the addition of 21 runs. The Australians’ spinners, aided by the early dew thus achieved what England’s speed battery failed to accomplish in the corresponding period yesterday. They were making the ball get up occasionally. Walters and Woolley were each “climbing” to the balls. Wyatt opened by swinging O’Reilly twice to the boundary. He then cocked up one rather awkwardly short. Hammond had a narrow escape just afterwards, mistiming Grimmett badly. O’Reilly was in splendid form with accurate even flighting and a perfect length. He bowled four consecutive maidens. Then Wyatt tried to drive Grimmett and lost his off stump. The Australians gathered round, congratulating Grimmett on his hundredth wicket in tests against England, a feat achieved, by only four other Australians, Turner, Trumble, Noble and Griffen. After bowling for hours O’Reilly was replaced by Ebeling, whose fourth ball rose quickly and Hammond snicked it straight into the hands of Oldfield. He batted for almost an hour and was never quite sure of himself. He had been scoring phenomenally in county cricket but was always strangely subdued against Australia. Leyland and Ames became partners in another useful stand. Beginning quietly, they gradually warmed up, pasting the bowling to all parts of the field, despite quick changes, including Chipperfield.
