THEFT OF ELECTRICITY.

INTERFERENCE WITH METER. GROCER FINED £l5. CHRISTCHURCH, August 20. A fine of £l5 was imposed in the Magistrate’s Court this morning on Arthur Edward Cook, a grocer, on a charge of tampering with an electric meter. The information was laid by the Christchurch City Council. Inspectors, it was stated, had found that the fuse on a pole had been replaced by some bridge or device to reconnect the house with the system inside the house. The meter had been bridged by someone with technical knowledge, taking current round instead of through the meter. The result was that the meter did not register. A wire led to a back bedroom, where a plug and a lamp socket were in use. The wiring was in a dangerous state and would never have been permitted by an inspector. The current had previously been cut off because of non-payment of accounts. —(P.A.)>
