BRILLIANT BOXING.

TAYLOR DEFEATS COSTA ON PpINTS. DECISION VERY POPULAR. AUCKLAND, August 20. Oneyif the most brilliant exhibitions of boxing seen in Auckland over a long period of years was witnessed at the Town Hall when Frank Taylor, of Auckland, the undefeated professional bantamweight champion of New Zealand, gained a points decision over Dal Costa, the bantamweight champion of New South Wales. Scenes of remarkable enthusiasm followed the announcement of the judge’s verdict, a number of drivers of a taxicab company by which .Taylor is employed rushing into the ring and carrying their hero shoulder high to his dressing room. Taylor well merited his wonderful reception. It is nearly four years since hp last fought and to be pitted against a man of Costa’s reputation and ability was asking him a very serious question. In his effort to stage a comeback, however, the Aucklander rose to the occasion magnificently, concentrating principally upon a strong right-handed attack to the Australian’s body. Taylor won every round up to the ninth, with the exception of the second, having done practically all the attacking throughout. Costa shoot his opponent badly with a hard right to the solar plexus in the ninth round and this obviously made Taylor groggy in the legs. Apparently realising that his only chance of success lay in a knockout the Australian went right after his man in the tenth round. He sent Taylor down with a right to the jaw, the Aucklander rising at the count of eight. He weathered the attack amid a storm of cheering from all parts of the house and gained a very popular decision on points.—(P.A.)
