OBITUARY.

MR. HUGH GILLIES.

PALMERSTON N., July 23. The death of Mr. Hugh Gillies occurred at his home, Rangitikei Line, on Saturday evening at the age of 82 years. The late Mr. Gillies was born at "Otaria, ” Martinborough, Wairarapa; in 1852. His early youth was spent in the district, and on reaching man's estate he was employed as a farm manager by the late Mr. Charles Robert Bidwill. This occupation he carried'on for some time, and he then joined up with the Gear Meat Company, for whom he acted as buyer. He took up his residence at Otaki, and subsequently at Foxton and Palmerston North, and finally on Rangitikei Line, retiring 15 years ago. All his life Mr. • Gillies manifested a great love for horses, and his connection with the ’Manawatu Racing Club dated almost from its formation. In 1897 he was elected president. He had been a steward of the club since then. Mr. Gillies took a very active part in the sport, and at one time raced some horses of his own. His interest extended to other racing clubs as well, and for many years he was judge at the Foxton and other district meetings. Mr. Gillies will be remembered for his work on the Manawatu A. and P. Association, of which body he was a very early member and a steward of many years’ standing. He also served as president, and was known throughout New Zealand as a first-class judge of horses and eattle. He was also a member of the Masonic Order and a member of the Manawatu Club and similar institutions in Wellington and Wanganui. The late Mr. Gillies leaves a widow and two children, Mr. W. S. Gillies (Taupo) and Mrs. Loudon (Palmerston North).
