“PUT ’EM UP!”

RIFLE POINTED AT HALL CARETAKER. EPISODE AT INVERCARGILL. INVERCARGILL, May 4. The caretaker of the Drill Hall was confronted with a rifle and a command of “Put ’em up! Put ’em up!’’ when he went to investigate the reason for the door leading to the defence store room being open last night. Tn the dim light he saw the muzzle of a rifle pointing straight at him and so unexpected was the vision that he involuntarily recoiled. One of two members of the Defence staff who happened to be on the premises, and who had drawn the caretaker’s attention to. the open door, was requested to go for the police. While the caretaker and the other man remained at the door they heard the breaking of glass and on Romg round to the window discovered that whoever had been in the office had made his (or their) escape. Subsequent investigations revealed that only a rifle appeared to have been taken, ihis morning two overcoats, a pair of shoes and a pair of boots were found outside the window.
