DELUGE OF RAIN.

HALF AN INCH IN TEN MINUTES. MINOR FLOODING REPORTED. A deluge of rain drenched Masterton and district shortly before two o’clock yesterday afternoon and in the short period of ten minutes or so half an snch of rain • fell. The culverts in JQueen Street and adjacent streets could not cope with the volume of fwater and the gutters were soon overflowing. In several cases blockages occurred and in a few minutes a considerable quantity of water collected in fhe streets. At Ninnes’s corner the water flooded the footpath to a depth of over a foot and flowed into Mr. Ninnes’s and Mr. Orange’s shops. Buildings to whjeh earthquake repairs ’were being effected also suffered and in One large drapery establishment the Tain poured through openings in the roof. Fortunately no damage was done .to stock. The downpour ceased almost as suddenly as it started and for !R time the sun shone brtively through the clouds and the air was fresh and jelean.

In the lowlying areas in Lambton (Quay appeared a shallow lake through which vehicular traffic on the harbour Bide splashed its way. For a time the {doorways of buildings on that side of rthe street were inaccessible unless one was prepared to wade. The thunderstorm was due to the same meteorological disturbance which was responsible for the gale and rain at Auckland on Thursday, an intense cyclone. —(P.A.)
