The certificates and trophies won by the pupils of Masterton West School in swimming and. athletic contests were presented to. the winners at a school gathering yesterday afternoon by Mr. W. V. Madden;, secretary of the committee. The prizes were won at school and inter-school contests.

At a recent meeting of the committee of the ■ Whiiarapa Kennel Club, it was decided to make application to the N.Z. Kennel Club to have the North Island field championship decided at Masterton on June 4. The Wairarapa championship, will be decided on that' date.

The monthly meeting of the Opaki Women’s Institute was held at Mrs. Wingate’s residence on Thursday last. Mrs. Carter and her daughter, of Carrington, demonstrated the making of wool quilts, a finished quilt evoking much praise. A recommendation that application be made for authority- to convert loans £2,214,700 is made to the Dunedin City Council by the finance committee. A meeting of the Friendly Societies’ Council was held on Thursday night in the Foresters’ Hall, Bro. Robert C. Jordan presiding. Among other business the president introduced the question of forming a Wairarapa district hospital friendly societies’ association, and steps were taken in the direction of bringing such an association into operation. Arrangements for the friendly societies football tournament to be played on June 2 were also made. Owing to the Foreign Mission Anniversary being held on May 13, "Mother’s Day” will be observed in the Masterton Methodist Circuit to-mor-row. The Rev. V. R. Jamieson will conduct the morning service, and in the evening the Rev. G. F. Stockwell will preach on “The Persistence of a Mother’s Love.” There will be an anthem by the choir. Mr. V. Greer will sing the solo “Vali,” and the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper will be administered at the close of the service.

A very interesting hour was spent at the Wharehui Kindergarten School on Thursday morning when a large number of parents attended to see the children at their usual morning routine, which proved very entertaining and interesting,.and showed how very keen they were on their work. A visiting ventriloquist kept the children amused and thrilled to see and hear “Johnnie” who, for 20 minutes, entertained both parents and children. The school closed yesterday for the term vacation. /

In finding a verdict of accidental death, with no blame attachable to anyone, regarding the level-crossing fatality at Waikiwi, in which Henry G. Brass, stock buyer, was killed, the Coroner, Mr. E. C. Levvey, S.M., remarked: “This is another of a series of very regrettable accidents which have been happening at level crossings. Visibility from the road is undoubtedly .bad. I think I should draw the attention of local bodies to the section, of the Public Works Act which empowers such bodies to have obstructions removed so as to provide a clear view of crossings.”—(P.A.) The total amount received through the “Day of Giving” appeal last Sunday for the extinction of the debt on St. Matthew’s Parish now totals £391 6s. McLevi,e will be the preacher at the Church of the Epiphany, and in the afternoon St. Matthew’s choir will accompany the Vicar to Taueru, when a musical service of praise will be rendered.
