At the conference of the Wellington district, Manchester Unity of Oddfellows, Bro. S. V. Gooding was elected and installed Grand Master of the District and Bro. A. Rippon was elected to the Management Committee. The Prime Minister and AttorneyGeneral (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes) announced on Saturday the appointment as King’s Counsel of Mr. A. H. Johnstone, Auckland; Mr. J. B. Callan, Dunedin; Mr. C. H. Weston, Wellington. They are to be sworn in at the Supreme Court this morning.—(P.A.) The Mayor (Mr. T. Jordan) will be attending the conference of the Municipal Association in Wellington this week. A meeting of the executive, of which Mr. Jordan is a member, is to be held to morrow, the association conference opening on the following day. The Town Clerk (Mr. T. T. Denbee) will also be attending the conference.

The committee of the Masterton branch of the W.E.A. states in its annual report that it has learned that an appointment in Tasmania has been secured by Mr. J. A. Brailsford, 8.A., who was Tutor Organiser for several years, and until last year, to the W.E.A. in the Wellington district. The committee wishes Mr. Brailsford all success and congratulates Tasmania upon obtaining an outstanding man.

The funeral of the late Mr. John McPherson Cole, which took place in Masterton on Saturday afternoon was largely attended, settlers and others being present from all parts of the district. The many beautiful wreaths which were received bore evidence of the respect in which the late Mr. Cole was held by the community. Services were held at the residence, Homebush, and at the graveside, the Rev. John Davie officiating. The pall-bearers were Messrs W. Moore, C. Brogden, R. fayne, V. Wellington, H. Champion and P. Allen.

Mr. W. Finnerty, who has for many years been a valued official of the Masterton Post Office staff, has been transferred to Hawera for which place he left on Saturday morning. Mr. Finnerty is well known in football and cricket circles. For several years he had been secretary of the Red Star Football Club, and had been a Wairarapa representative footballer. His departure will mean a serious loss to sport in the Wairarapa. Mr. Finnerty takes the place on transfer of Mr. T. C. Wickens who will now remain in Masterton. On Friday night the members of the Red Star Cricket Club made a presentation to Mr. Finnerty.

Parishioners of St. Peter’s met recently in the Parish Hall to say farewell to the Rev. N. E. and Mrs. Winhall, who are leaving for Pahautanui, where Mr. Winhall takes up his duties as vicar of the parish. An informal programme followed games, and some music by the Misses S. Bolden and Kindell. The Rev. W. Bullock spoke of his association with Mr. Winhall (who is a son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Winhall, of Masterton), for the last thirteen years in Masterton and during his three years as curate at St. Peter’s. He had, he said, rendered efficient and loyal service both to the viear and the parish, and they were very sorry to lose him. The gifts made that evening were tokens of real appreciation. The churchwardens (Mr. A. W. W. Curtis and Mr. H. G, Didsbury) also spoke in appreciative terms. Mr. Winhall replied, saying how happy he had been in his work during the three years he had been curate of St. Peter’s. He thanked the vicar and the parishioners for their gifts, which would remind him and Mrs. Winhall of their many friends at St. Peter’s. The presentation consisted of a study chair, afternoon tea table, and cheque. (
