APPEARANCE AT WELLINGTON MEETING. HAMPSON IN FINE FORM. WELLINGTON, March 10. Thia re was an attendance of about 5000 at an athletic gathering held at Athletic Park to-day at which the visiting Australians, T. E. Hampson, J. Metcalfe and W. Barwick competed. Following are the results of the events in which the Australians figured:— 100 Yards Handicap.—First heat: T. E. Hampson (Australia) 1, S. Farrington 2, K. O’Connell 3; time, 10' 2-ssec. Rafter (20yds.), 2; W. Ogg (20yds), 3. Time, 4min 30 l-‘ssee. Barwick conceded 25 yards in this event, the Wellington champion, Cooke, being on 10 yards. Cooke led for the first tap, Barwick being near the rear. Rafter led at the half mile, Barwick being second. The New Zealand two miles walk record of 14min 12 3-ssee. was broken by 14 seconds by J. Driscoll, Napier,* at the Caledonian Sports held at Napier on Saturday. The previous record was established by A. Brady on April 15, 1896, at Auckland. Driscoll’s time was 13min '5B 3-ssee. He covered the first half mile in 3min. Bsec., the mile in 6min 42sec, the mile and a half in 10 min 28see., and the final half mile in 3min 30 3-ssec.—(P.A.)
