HOCKEY TOURNEY.

PLAY AT DANNEVIBKE. YESTERDAY’S GAMES. DANNEVIRKE, August 28. The weather was very wet this afternoon, when sectional play in the New Zealand ladies’ hockey tournament was completed on a heavy, slippery ground, the games being played in continuous rain. At the results of to-day’s play, the section leaders are: A, Canterbury; B, Otago; C, Eastern. Southland lodged a protest over the Canterbury match owing to extra time being played in the first spell, during, which Canterbury shot their first goal. The protest is being considered this evening. The games were chiefly outstanding for the easy victories' of Otago over Wellington and Eastern over Wairarapa A, while Canterbury ousted Southland after a keen fight, ensuring the K Clip returning to the South with either Eastern (holders), Otago or Canterbury. Canterbury and Southland, hitherto unbeaten in section A, played an even game on a quagmire and the former may be considered lucky to have won, the losers having the territorial advantage, but being unable to finish off their movements. Canterbury scored a goal in each half, Miss V. McNabb being responsible for both, while Miss L. Heaps goaled for Southland two minutes before time sounded. Wellington slumped badly against Otago, being completely outclassed, the score being a true indication of the fortunes of the game. For the winners, the scorers were Misses R. Hunt (2), G. Vidal (2), L. Vidal (2), A. Mackie (2), R<. Kreft and M. Scott. Eastern notched an easy victory against Wairarapa A to win Sectional honours. Eastern did the bulk of the attacking and led by 4/0 at half time, the scorers being Misses K. Bond (2), Reed and Mclntyre. The spell was very one-sided. In the second half, goals were scored for the winners by Misses Reid (2) and Bond. PROTEST DISMISSED. DANNEVIRKE:, August 28. After hearing evidence, the committee agreed that the evidence' of overtime being played was so indefinite that the decision of the referees must stand. The draw for to-morrow is: Otago v. Eastern; Canterbury v. Ruahine A. The latter has no place in the final.—(P.A.)
