SCOUT JAMBOREE.

PREPARATIONS FOR GATHERING IN MELBOURNE. BIG| CONTINGENT COMING FROM NEW ZEALAND. SYDNEY, August 17. Already preparations are well forward for the greatest Scout jamboree ever held in Australia. This will take place in Melbourne from January 1 to January 15, 1935, as part of the Melbourne Centenary celebrations. It is anticipated that there will be an attendance of at least 15,000 Scouts from all over the world, including a big contingent from New Zealand. One of the greatest difficulties encountered by the committee so far is the selection of a suitable site. One of .the city parks was proposed, but an examination last week showed that it would be too small. Primarily it will be .a Pan-Pacifie jamboree, but it has now been decided that other countries should be asked to join in the celebrations. The secretary of the Victorian Boy Scouts’ Association, Mr. F. R. Sanders, has been attending the international jamboree at Gondollo, near Budapest, and he has advised that the grand council has approved of the Melbourne jamboree. It is hoped that New Zealand will be able to send a delegation almost as large as that expected from the smaller States of Australia. The New South y will number 1000, and South Australia has promised a delegation of 500. Invitations are now to be sent to Burma, Ceylon, India, Siam, Malay, China, Japan, Cuba, Canada, the Western and Central States of America, Peru, Chile, South Africa, and several other countries. Imperial Headquarters in London will be expected to send a contingent which may include important personages in the Scout movement. In order to suitably accommodate the jamboree it will be necessary to find an area of about 200 acres with a large arena for Scout activities. Big expense will be involved in providing a temporary water supply and lighting, but these things will be essential. As the Scouts will play an important part in the centenary celebrations the camping ground must be close to the city. A big staff will be formed to attend to various sections of the jamboree. Many committees will be appointed, and leaders for them will have to be found. Scouts and others will be co-opted into service. Of course, all preparations will be on a large scale, particularly, the catering.
