PERSONAL.
The many friends of Mr. Herbert Swain, of Carterton, will regret to hear of the death of his wife, Elizabeth Ann, which took place on Sunday evening. The late Mrs. Swain, who was 62 years of age, had not enjoyed the best of health for some months. The interment, which will be private, will take place this afternoon. The Board of Governors of Canterbury College yesterday selected Professor C. Malthus to occupy the Chair of Modern Languages, left vacant by the resignation of Professor Blunt. Professor Malthus is at present in the University of Tasmania. He was educated at Timaru High School and Canterbury College. He graduated M.A. in 1912 with first-elass honours in English and French and taught at Nelson College till 1914. After two years on active service he was appointed senior master of French and English at Timaru. In 1920 he was chosen as the first travelling scholar in French and spent a year at Larbonne and Paris, and a year at Grenoble. In 1922 he returned to Timarw but was appointed lecturer in modern languages at the University of Tasmania, and in 1932 was given the status of associate professor.— (P.A.)
