W.E.A. PROBLEMS.

THE NEED OF LOCAL SUPPORT. (To the Editor). Sir > T ke recent discussion at the meeting of the Victoria CoUege Council has now made public the difficult position of the Wellington Centre of the W.E.A. It appears probable that the annual grant to the Wellington ventre may not be available for the coming year. And in the absence of this grant there are at present no funds available to continue the services of Mr. Brailsford as tutor-organ-iser. The position can be saved if each branch of the Wellington Centre can strengthen itself sufficiently to enable a reasonable contribution to the centre funds. We here have been endeavouring to give a lead in this direction, and if we can succeed and get other branches to follow our example the necessary funds should be found. What is required is a more general public appreciation of the importance in these times of maintaining the one institution that offers to the adult population of New Zealand facilities for directed study of pressing social questions. With a view to stimulating interest we are considering holding again the recent informative debate on the question of secondary industries, with the participation of members of various other organisations. The matter will be further dealt with when the local committee meets after the school holidays.—Yours, etc., • H. C. ROBINSON, (Vice-Chairman W.E.A|, Masterton Branch.)
