The late Mr. Cargill was managing director of the Cargill Publishing Company, which publishes the “Morrinsville Star,” the “Matamata Record,” and the “Putaruru Press.” Mr. Cargill, who was in his 63rd year, was born in Kent, England, and was educated at Newport and Dulwich College. He was an enthusiastic tennis player and cricketer, and some years ago represented Wairarapa, Wanganui, and South Taranaki in the cricket field. He was also a senior player for the Red Star Football Club and acted as secretary for some time. He was proprietor of the “Wairarapa Star” from 1892 to 1902, and (with Mr. A. C. Major), changed the name of the paper to the “Wairarapa Age.” Subsequently he became proprietor of the “Patea Press” and the “Pukekoho Times.” He purchased the “Morrinsville Star” in 1915. Mr. Cargill was formerly a member of the Wanganui Education Board and the Taranaki Education Board; and was president of the New Zealand Master Printers’ Federation from 1928 to 1930. The late Air.
