TWO INTERESTING BOOKS. The two books ‘ ‘ Romance of the Bail,” issued by the Railways Department, are described as illustrated narratives of the railway express journeys between Auckland and Bldlington and Lyttelton and the Bluff. 'lt might be thought that these are uninteresting subjects, but Mr. James Cowan, the; author of the books, has an eye for the beautiful and the romantic, and the gift of showing his readers all the charm that lies in the precincts of the railway. Many of his descriptions of the country through which the railway passes, and of landmarks and other spots where history was made in the clashes of the Maori wars and in the construction of the main trunk lines, will add new interest to the trips, even tor the most experienced traveller Good maps serve as reference guides °, d , ue ‘ ions of Photographs and sketches illustrate interesting events connected with the romance of railroad construction and historical progress since the earliest years of settlement.
