ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.

WAIRARAPA ENGAGEMENTS ON SATURDAY. > MATCHES AT MASTER.TON. The popularity of Association football in the Wairarapa may be judged by the fact that on Saturday, four teams were fielded. When it is realised •that the code has' not been played in the district since 1928, and that on Saturday three of the teams gave a very good account of themselves against teams that have been playing very consistently for a great number of years, it shows that there is plenty of room, for the game. The results of Saturday’s games were as follow:— Manawatu representatives beat Wairarapa representatives, at Palmerston North, 4/3; Diamonds, Wellington, beat Wairarapa representatives, at the Park Oval, 4/3; Diamond’ boys beat ■ Wairarapa boy representatives, at the Park Oval, 3/2; Diamonds juniors beat Wairarapa eleven, at the Hockey Ground, 10/1. In the evening the association organised a dance, which was held in the Municipal Social Hall. It was a very happy gathering and everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves, while Frank Pool’s Blue River Dance Band helped to create the right atmosphere. During the evening Mr. J. Walker, president, presented the Pragnell Cup to Albion, the winning team of the championship. The Monte Carlo dance was won by Mrs. Frank Pool and Mr. Holdsworthy and the Lucky Spot by Miss Dolly Merritt and Mr. Fox. CHATHAM CUP FINAL. PONSONBY BEAT MILLERTON. WELLINGTON, August 27. Millerton All Blacks, of the South Island, had all the ill-fortune in the Chatham Cup final against Ponsonby, Auckland, at the Basin Reserve on Saturday, in which they were defeated by 0 goals to 1. In the first half they ran all over their opponents and did everything but score. The second spell was more even, but on the general run of play the Auckland representatives were distinctly luckier.—(P.A.)
