SPIVAKOVSKY-KURTZ TRIO.
CONCERT TO-MORROW NIGHT. There can be no doubt as to the nature of the welcome which awaits the world-famous Spivakovsky-Kurtz trio of instrumentalists when they make their first appearance before a Masterton audience to-morrow night in. the Opera House. Much is expected of these three artists, each of whom had an established European reputation prior to the formation of the trio in 1931. Mr. Jascha Spjvakovsky, the pianist, is very well remembered in New Zealand for his extraordinarily virile and thrilling playing here eleven years ago. He is now associated with his younger brother, Tossy, a favourite violinist with audiences throughout tho Continent, and Edmund Kurtz, a young ’cellist who has been acclaimed by Australian Press critics as “the finest ’cellist since the first visit of Jean Gerardy.” The trio present programmes of solos, sonatas and ensembles. Only a small proportion can be called “chamber music,” usually one trio in each programme, the remainder consisting of recital solos, concertos and songtas. This arrangement allows for the inclusion of a few lighter numbers, generally as encore items, which might be considered out of place in a recital of chamber music. To-morrow night’s programme will include the immortal Schubert Trio in B flat, a Handel Passacaglia transcribed for violin and ’cello, Sarasate’s * 1 Carmen” Fantasy, Tschaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, Liszt’s Rakoczy March, and the Chopin G minor Ballade. Plans arc at Arts and Crafts, where day sale tickets may also bo obtained to-morrow.
