t The monthly meeting of the League of Mothers was held in the Parish Hall yesterday afternoon, Mrs J. Miller presiding. The speaker of the day was Mrs M. Stace, of Wellington, whie" gave a very interesting and enlightening account of the work of the iSt. John Ambulance Brigade. Mrs iStace, who is Lady District Officer of the order, traced its development from its origin in the eleventh century to the present day. Recently a fault developed on the Wairarapa Power Board’s Norfolk Road line supplying the freezing works. Upon investigation it was found that a piece of galvanised wire had been thrown on to the 1100 volt line. This wire made contact with the pole and set it oh fire. The tip of the pole was burnt off allowing the cross arms and wire to drop to the ground. A considerable amount of: wire throwing goes on and in the past two months the board has had three cases under its notice. It is a very dangerous practice. One of the dangers pointed out by the engineer is that when a piece of wire is thrown across any line, it causes an arc to be set up between two wires. The wires burn through and fall to the ground. Under certain conditions these arcs may cause the automatic gear not to function, which means the line will be lying on the ground alive and capable of electrocuting any person or death to any animal.
