FESTIVAL OF BAKRID.
MOHAMMEDAN OBSERVANCE IN INDIA. (Received Tliis Day, 1.12 a.m.) CALCUTTA, April 6. There were impressive scenes at Calcutta to-day at the great Mohammedan Festival of Bakrid. Countless thousands in the gladdest garb congregated at mosques to offer prayer. The remainder spent the holiday making poor but not forgotten supplications thousands of beggars who lined the pavements being rewarded. Elaborate precautions taken by the police to prevent disturbances, as this is a favourite day for communal warfare. The scene was repeated on a smaller scale in every town and village in India.
