Constable C. O. Anson, who arrived in Masterton yesterday, will take up his duties here to-morrow.

Mrs K. A. Johnston (Southland) has been appointed to fill the vacancy at the Eketahuna District High School caused by the departure of Miss Stephens. She will take up her new duties on February 1. The interment of the late Mr. William Collins, who was accidentally killed by a log falling on him at Akatarawa on Saturday afternoon, took place at de Featherston Cemetery on Tuesday. The Rev. W. J. Durrad officiated at the graveside. The pall bearers were Messrs W. Muir, B. McManus, W. Patterson, P. Duffy, W. Johnson and W. Jamieson. The late Mr. Collins, who was 45 years of age, was the second son of Mrs and the late Mr. W. Collins, who were well-known residents of Featherston.

Mrs J. Algie, of Main Bond, Pahiatna, sustained a bereavement in the ‘death of her brother, Mr. George Hillas, of Fordell, Wanganui. The late Mr. Hillas was well known in the Mauriceville district. He retired on Saturday evening after spending a busy day hay-making. Early on Sunday morning his condition was such that he was taken to the Wanganui Pospitai, suffering apparently from sunstroke. He was predeceased by his wife and a daughter several years ago. Mrs F. Hillas, of Pori, is a sister-in-law.

The funeral of the late Mrs H. J. Jones yesterday was largely attended nnd many beautiful wreaths bore witness to the high respect and esteem in which the deeeased lady wan held. Services at the house and at the graveside in the Masterton Cemetery were conducted by the Rev. W. Parker, with whom was associated the Bev. E. O. Blamires. In an address at the graveside, Mr. Parker paid an impressive tribute to the Into Mrs Jones as a woman of sterling character, who had given devoted and admirable service to the Methodist Church and to the community. Mr. R. J. Weir, of Wellington, who has been appointed to succeed Mr. J. R. Hanlon as Officer in Charge of the Labour Department’s Masterton office, was farewelled by members of the Wellington Furnitore Trades Apprenticeship Committee, of which Mr. Weir was secretary. Mr. J. G. Marshall, on behalf of the employers’ representatives, and Mr. J. Ferguson, on behalf of the workers’ representatives, together with other members of the committee, spoke in appreciative terms of the excellent services rendered by Mr. Weir, who was presented with a gold-mounted fountain pen.

A very enjoyable social and gift fcvening was tendered to Miss Winnifred Rutter, last Tuesday evening by Mrs W. E. Bate and family at their residence, Church Street. The occasion of the gathering was to bid farewell to 'Miss Rutter, who is shortly to be married. Much-appreciated vocal items were rendered by the Misses N. and L. Cocker, D. Wellington and D. Jamieson; and games and competitions were heartily enjoyed by all. After a dainty supper Mr. A. E. Bate extended the good wishes of the company to the guest of the evening, who then opened the numerous gift parcels, assisted by her fiance, Mr. G. W. Graham. Mr. Graham suitably responded, and the evening was closed with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”

A numerous and representative assemblage of mourners attended thp funeral of the late Mr. Hugh Mackay, which proceeded yesterday from Masterton to the Greytown Cemetery. Included in the cortege were two cars loaded with wreaths. Amongst the

mourners were representatives of the two Masonic Lodges in Masterton and of the Martinborough Lodge. Services at the residence in Renall Street and at the graveside were . conducted by the Rev. E. J. Rich and a Masonic service was conducted at the graveside by office-bearers of the Martinborough Lodge. The pall-bearers were Messrs G. H. Perry, H. C. L. Robinson, W. G. Lamb, D. Thompson, S. R. Gawith, J. Andrew, E. Chalmers and Dr. H. E. Webb.
