CARTERTON AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr. W. Fisher) presiding. The treasurer reported receipt in district fund account £497 13s 8d and Gasworks £219 7s lid. Accounts amounting to £559 5s lid district fund and £lB7 12s lid Gasworks were passed. The gas consumed for November was 424,800 cubic feet, of a net value of £lB7 5s lOd, as compared with 376,900 cubic feet value, £169 12s 2d for the corresponding month last year.

The overseer reported that the path tarring in Kent Street had been finished for a distance of 33 chains. Water tables cleaned at the north end of High Street and in Rhodes Street. The footpath had been metalled in Wyndham Street, and patch metallipg carried out in Richmond Road. Tiro new water connections had been made. The Inspector reported that one notice to remove rubbish had been given and one applicant for a motor driver’s license examined and a license issued. One head of cattle had been impounded, and instructions given in seven cases to cut back hedges. The takings at the Baths were £8 5s 9d. The Works Committee reported that, a water connection had been granted to a section in High Street for Mr. Mortensen. The tender of Mr. J. A. Dudson was accepted for the supply of dog collars, and the overseer was given authority to tar two chains of Nobel Street, the cost to bo paid by the property owner. Taxi licenses were granted to Messrs A. W. Gray and W. P. Williams.

The Gas Manager reported that during November 37 tons 12 cwt. of coal were carbonised, returning 454,700 cubic feet of gas, approximately 12,100 cubic feet ton. Of this 424,800 cubic feet were used per consumers’ meters, 500 cubic feet at the office, leaving 23,700 cubic feet unaccounted for. During the month four slot meters were installed, 15 cookers overhauled and 18 consumers complaints attended to. The gas engine had been overhauled and worn parts renewed. The plant was working very efficiently. The Gas Committee recommended that all applications for installation of slot meters be brought before the Commitee before the exchange of meter was made. It was decided to place restrictions on the use of garden hoses during the summer months.
