BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
MEETING OE MASTERTON COUNCIL. The Mayor (Mr. T. Jordan) presided at the monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, held last night. Others present were: Councillors R. Russell, W. L. Free, H. M. Peacock, H. J. O’Leary, Trevor Beet ham, A. Rippon W. H. Judd, A. D. Low and W. White. Councillor J. L. Murray was granted leave of absence.
An application from the Mastertoil Amateur Athletic Club for the use of the Park Oval on January 23 for the purpose of holding a sports meeting was granted on the same conditions as last year and with the right to charge for admission.
The Borough Engineer was requested to submit a report to the next meeting of the council on the question of improving the entrance to the Cemetery by the Kiosk.
The secretary of the Wairarapa Hospital Board wrote stating that it had been found that the tenderer for funerals, payable by the board, was paying certain cemetery fees. It was decided to advise the board that in future, on the production of a certificate signed by a J. I’., the Act would be complied with.
Letters from the Kaiapoi Borough Council regarding legislation being brought down compulsorily to reduce the rate of interest, from the I’etone Borough Council regarding legislation in connection with the union of boroughs, and circular letters from the Morrinsville Borough Council regarding the Valuation of Lands Act, 1925, and from the Otago Electric Power Board in connection with the conversion of local body loans, were received. An application from Mr C. R. Goudgo for an ice cream license w'as granted. The Borough Inspector, Mr. T. A. Russell, was granted leave to attend the Sanitary Inspectors’ Association conference, to be held in Auckland in January. The Trust Lands Trust is to be advised that the council is unable to make any contribution towards the cost of forming Macara Street except to allow the Borough Engineer to supervise the work. An application from Messrs. Levin and Co. for permission to store dryskins and hides in their store at Akura Road was granted. A similar application from Mr. Betts was also granted. An application from the Wairarapa Cricket Association for the use of the Park Oval on January 2 and 3 for the purpose of playing a match against Manawatu, was granted. A further application from the association for permission to take round a collection box during matches at the Park was refused.
