BOROUGH WORK.

REPORTS FOR THE PAST MONTH.

At last night’s meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, the Borough Engineer, Mr. C. R. Mabson, reported as follows on the work carried out during November: — Streets.—The grass mower has been kept busy for the last few weeks cutting the grass flanks in various streets around the borough. The Town Creek has been thoroughly cleaned out from Afakora Road to Dixon Street, using unemployed labour, and a start has been made with the Kuripuni Creek, commencing at Columba Road and working westward. New kerbing has been laid in Villa Street from Cambridge Terrace to Perry Street; Perry Street to Lincoln Road, and from end of kerb near Albert Street to Victoria Street, all on the eastern side. Tararua Street foothpaths have been re-formed from Pownall Street to Wright Street. Fleet Street has been metalled and consolidated and tar sealing is proceeding and will soon be completed. Fence along Short Street from Elbow to Mr Huhne’s property has been removed and re-erected on the new alignment. Manuka Street regrading has been practically completed except for a little extra banking on the turns. The foundation of the upper portion of this street is very poor and a different method of road construction may have to be resorted to in order to get over the> difficulty. It has been necessary to defer the completion of this street till later in the season owing to the shortage of water. The metalling of Kuripuni Street is proceeding and should be completed in a few days.

Water and Drainage.—- During the month four new services were put in and fourteen renewals. Defective services were repaired in Worksop Road and Hessey Street.

Building permits.—During the month nine permits were issued having an estimated value of £2BOl 14s 6d. The fees thereon amounted to £lO. For the corresponding period last year ten permits were issued having an estimated value of £2273 4s lid. BOROUGH INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The Borough Inspector (Mr. T. A. Russell) reported:— 1 am pleased to be able to report that no case of infectious disease was reported during November. To date this month one case of infantile paralysis was notified. Plumbing and Drainage. — Eighteen plumbing and drainage permits were issued and one sewer connection was installed. The usual testing and inspections were carried out. Requisitions.—The following requisitions were served during November: Plumbing and drainage repairs, 28; repair taps, 18; clear noxious weeds, 68; remove rubbish, 4; abate nuisance, 2; remove fowls, 2; cut back shrubs, 3; provide adequate water supply, 7; provide rubbish bin, 1; clear creeks, 4. Milk Supply.—The usual milk samples were taken for general analysis. One vendor was convicted and lined £lO for selling milk under the prescribed standard. Ice Creams. Twenty-seven licenses have been issued and a further application is before you and as the premises are in order, I respectfully recommend that the license be granted. Dangerous Goods.—The regulations concerning the storage of dangerous goods have been amended and tho storage in steel drums containing over 40 gallons with cases is no longer allowed. Steel drums now require to be stored at a distance of 50 feet from protected work.

Heavy Traffic.—-Fees collected during November amounted to £43 9s Id. Four persons were convicted for breaches of ri regulations. The fines amounted to *4 15s. Twelve applicants for drivers ’ licenses were examined, two failing GAS MANAGER’S REPORT The Gas Engineer-Manager (Mr. J Learmonth) reported, inter alia, as follows:—Gas manufactured for the month of November was 4,008,000 cubic feet, being an increase of 0.2 per cent over the corresponding period of last year. Gas sold per meter shows a decrease of 5.7 per cent. Sales: Two cookers, 1 secondhand cooker 1 cleaner ! ga s ring. New Consumers.-'-’"C- rhe Government Inspector visited the works on November 29 and tested and passed 25 meters. Sulphuretted hydrogen absent; calorific value of the gas was 480 B.T.U. During the month several old services have been renewed and 26 meters were changed PARK CUSTODIAN’S REPORT. The Park Custodian (Mr. H. Sturgeon) reported:—The general work of the 1 ark has been carried out satisfactorily during the previous month. The bedding out of plants for summer flowering has been completed. The work of levelling and scything of grass is progressing satisfactorily. The work for the month will be forking all beds and borders in the Park; working native border and Island border; also cut ing hedges where needed, and general Park work.
