SEVERE EARTHQUAKE.
Town of Wairoa Very Badly Damaged. GISBORNE ALSO SUFFERS. NO FATALITIES REPORTED. MANY MIRACULOUS ESCAPES. A severe earthquake was experienced on the east coast of the North Island at about 1.30 o’clock yesterday morning, the disturbance being described in Wairoa and Gisborne as the most serious since that of February 3, 1931. The centre of the shake, it is stated, appears to have been in the vicinity of Waipiro Bay, about 70 miles north-east of Gisborne. No fatalities are reported but three people were injured at Wairoa In Gisborne and Wairoa much structural damage was caused to buildings and public services were dislocated.
