AMATEUR BOXING.

WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION’S TOURNEY. SPLENDIDLY CONTESTED BOUTS. FORD BEATS HAWKER. One of the finest amateur boxing programmes ever presented, in the Wairarapa was witnessed at the tournament staged in the Opera House on Saturday night by the Wairarapa Boxing Association. Every one of the eleven bouts were first-class, while the standard of performance throughout was very high. Capably organised and controlled, the tourney was most enjoyable and the officials of the association are to be congratulated on the success achieved. There was a very large attendance, and in addition to Wairarapa boxers, contestants of note were present from Wellington and the Manawatu. A pleasing feature of the evening was the promptitude with which the lengthy programme of 'bouts was despatched. Mr. G. Barr, as usual, proved a capable referee. Following are the results:— D. Smith (Carterton) list. beat Cutler ('Palmerston North) list. 11b. A willing, even bout. Smith forced matters from the outset and scored freely with both hands to the face. Cutler fought 'back well in the last round, but Smith more than held his own to take the decision by a good margin. A. Young (Masterton) Bst. 71b beat W. Jones (Wellington), Bst. 11b. The Wellington boy impressed as a particularly clever boxer well endowed with style and science. Young gave a spirited display against a clever opponent and secured the decision by virtue of sheer aggressiveness. He handed out a severe gruelling to Jones in the last round. Mac© (Wellington) lOst. 101 b beat Flaws (Masterton) list 51b. What promised to be a stirring fight ended early in the second round, when Flaws took tke count with a right to th© chin. He was a trifle unlucky as the blow that felled him was a wild swing into which he unfortunately ran. E ; . Carrig (Masterton) 9st. 31b. drew with Woods (Wellington), 9st. 31b. A lightning fast and splendid encounter. Both lads frequently stood toe to toe and swapped well-timed, stinging punches. Carrig appeared to be ahead on points but the decision met with fairly general favour.

J. Cadwallader (Greytown) Bst. beat Hopkins (Palmerston North) Bst. After a shaky opening, Cadwallader settled down to give, a smart display. Hopkins had more science, but the Greytown lad connected nicely in the last round with a series of straight lefts. He took th© verdict by a narrow margin. Jollife (Wellington) list. 11b. beat Udy (Carterton), 13st. 41b. In spite of his disadvantage in weight, height and reach, Jollife pasted Udy freely in the first and second rounds and though the latter opened out in the last session he could not make up the leeway. The verdict met with a hostile reception from a section of the audience. There was absolutely nothing wrong witn it however, and Udy had only himself to blame for his defeat.

Hopkins (Palmerston North) flat. 81b beat T. Carroll (Masterton) lOst. 21b. A beautiful straight left which connected time and again secured the decision for Hopkins after an excellent display. Both lads boxed at a fast clip and there was little between them. It was a first-class exhibition of fast, clever boxing. Carroll has a particularly nice style and is improving with every appearance. Loveridge (Wellington) Bst. 81b. beat 6. Donoghue (Wellington) Bst. 91b. Donoghue, who is the New Zealand flyweight. champion, gave a splendid exhibition of shadow-sparring, but Loveridge did all the hitting and scored an easy win. There was too much showmanship about Donoghue’s display. J. Davis (Pahiatua) lOst. Bft). beat Pickrang (Wellington), list. 31b. After a tame opening, the bout developed into a spirited contest with the resourceful Davis always prominent. He boxed coolly and confidently against a stronger opponent to score a good win. J. Donoghue (Wellington), £st. 71b. beat O. Cadwallader (Greytown), 9st. 71b. A good fight, with plenty of action. Cadwallader was the aggressor/ all the way but his opponent was too clever and piled on the points to take the decision.

J. Ford (Masterton), list. 41b. beat A. Hawker (Wellington), lOst. 131 b. Easily the best fight of the night. Ford gave a splendid display of clever, resourceful boxing, and, good though his opponent was, he won every round. The fight went the full six rounds and there was no lack of action. Ford was in the pink of condition and gave his best exhibition to date. He varied his attack nicely, concentrating first on the body and then on the head. Hawker fought back gamely all the way, but he was really not match for Ford who ran out an easy winner on points. Hawker defeated Davies at the recent Carterton tourney. Ford won the cup presented by the president of the Association, Mr. A. G. Lawson.
