MR. GOODE’S DEFENCE.

EVIDENCE AT THE ENQUIRY.

CORRUPTION DENIED.

SYDNEY, July 4. Giving evidence before the Royal which is inquiring into the charges against him of misconduct while he was goods yard superintendent in the Railways Department, Charles J. Gjoode denied having received any money whatever from Mr. Waldron, or having agreed to become interested in Waldron's Carrying Company. He had, however, told Mr. Waldron that he would be pleased to give advice at any time in regard to cartage methods.

Mr. Goode said that he reminded Mr. Waldron that he had an offer to leave the Railways Department at £2250 a year, and had rejected it. It was therefore unlikely that while an officer of the Railways Department he would accept any kind of minor position with Mr. Waldron's firm.

Mr. Goode went on to explain the method of dealing with tenders for the cartage of wool to and from the railways, and gave evidence that when be accepted Mr. Vernon's tender which had been questioned, he had been guided by figures furnished by his officers. He also claimed to have saved the Railways Department many thousands of pounds on the purchase of lorries and in economies. He had arranged with Vernon's to get shed wool carted at 8d per bale, which he regarded as an exceedingly favourable price at that time. He also gave a full explanation why other cartage tenders were unsuitable or rejected.
