GOODE INQUIRY ki LEW SOUTH WALES. ALLEGED PAYMENTS MADE BY CARRIERS. NO EXPLANATION OFFERED. (Received Tuesday, 8.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 5. A feature Of the rrnss-evamina-tion at the Goode inquiry to-day was the refusal of C. J. Goode, who is the central figure, to answer a series of questions concerning payments alleged to have been made by railway carrying firms between 1927 and 1928 while Goode was Superintendent of Goods Traffic. Some of the questions related to Goode’s own banking account. He was asked to explain where .five hundred banknotes came from on July 14, 1927, which were paid into his bank. Then followed questions about A. E. Vernon’s cheques of varying amounts, all of which Goode declined to answer nor would he state what consideration they represented. The Royal Commissioner asked: “On what grounds do you refuse to answer?”

Goode replied: “On the advice of my counsel and on the ground that it might incriminate me.”

Further questions were then asked about moneys allegedly received from a carrier named Davis. These were also unanswered. Mr. Shand, who is assistln& H ° yal Commissioner, interposed: ‘Have you any regard for your character at all?” counsel, Mr. Barton, object-
